The Food Source

May
02

We daily see patients that need a boost in their nutrition and we advise them of such. Then we get the inevitable question, "Doc, I eat a lot of vegetables. Why am I ______(fill in the nutrient(s)of choice here, magnesium, calcium, etc) deficient? Can't I just eat some more broccoli?" And the response is that our soils are being depleted, so the food is less nutrient dense, and genetically modified (GM) foods are much more prevelent in the grocery store than any of us imagine.

Proper Backpack Wearing

Mar
13

This article released by the American Physical Therapy Association is quite accurate and informational. Parents should be vigilent about proper backpack ergonomics for their children. Improper biomechanics predispose a child to a lifetime of complaints and chronic problems, including, but not limited to chronic subluxations, chronic back, neck and/or shoulder pain, numbness and tingling of extremities in severe cases. If your child is experiencing any such conditions, assess their backpack situation, and have them checked by a chiropractor.

High Heels Create Unnecessary Mechanical Strain On Joints

Feb

This is a great article. It covers all the cautions we tell patients about high-heel wearing. My recommendation if you are going to wear heels, only once a week or if you want to wear them more frequently, get your feet and spine adjusted weekly. I get adjusted after each heel wearing.

Cervical Pillows: Who needs 'em?

Jan
24

Patients frequently ask us if they should be using a cervical pillow and my usual answer is "yes" but make sure you get one that fits you properly. For a side-sleeper you'll need a pillow that fills in the space between your shoulder and ear and supports your neck. Look for a pillow that allows your cervical spine to be supported in a straight line, rather than your neck being proped up at an angle.

Baby Steps Resolutions

Jan
13

Someone asked me today what my New Year's Resolution was for 2012 or did I not believe in that silliness? That got me thinking, what are my resolutions this year? I have decided to make some rather small changes in my life this year. One of them is to only commit to doing my best and making good choices for the day ahead of me. One day at a time. And I will commit to the positive choices ahead of time, at night, so in the morning I know where I'm headed and how I'll get there.

Doc, is running bad for my knees?

Nov

Frequently our patients ask us this question in one form or another. The very short answer? Yes. And no. I'm sure there are authorities in plenty of health professions that will heartily disagree with my following explanation, and they are welcome to. I'm simply sharing what has been my personal and professional experience in my career.
